How to implement ISO 22000 for your organization
ISO 22000 in brief
ISO 22000 is the Food Safety Management system standard that
sets out the requirements for food safety management system. The standard lists
out what an organization needs to do in order to display its ability to control
hazards related to food safety so as to ensure that the food they process or
produce is safe for consumption. ISO 22000 standard is applicable to any
company irrespective of its size or position as a food sector. Every food manufacturer
has the responsibility to produce safe and quality food or food products for
the wellbeing of the customers in addition for their own reputation. This is one
of the important reasons why ISO 22000 exists to manage the quality of food production.
Just imagine the consequences of consuming unsafe food. The reactions
can be life threatening sometimes and to avoid all these, it is better for an organization to have
the ISO 22000 food safety management system in place. Food safety management
system standard not only assists companies to identify threats or dangers
associated to food safety but also works with other ISO management standards like

ISO 22000 integrates the principles of a Hazard Analysis and
Critical Control Point (HACCP) and ISO 9001. It is advisable for organizations
to certify to ISO 22000. The standard was last revised in the year 2018.
The standard requires meeting applicable statutory and
regulatory criteria that are related to food safety system. The development of the
food safety management standard presents a proactive approach which is systemic
and logical that can efficiently address the problems and concerns related to
food safety. The structure of ISO 22000 is similar to any other ISO standard. The
intention of this common approach is to enable organizations integrate a single management
system that meets the needs and requirements of two or more management system standards
like the ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001 etc.
How to implement ISO 22000 for your organization
If your organization is a food safety management and is
willing to implementing ISO 22000, then you can conduct an internal audit after
necessary documentation and training your staff on the new changes in the
management operations to meet the requirements of the standard. You need to demonstrate
that your organization was fully functional and has regular internal audit
every three months. You can approach a reputed certification body and if no
conformities are found, then your organization will be issued with the ISO 22000
certification. This certification is valid for a period of three years and audits
should happen from time to time within this period. Upon completion of the stipulated
period, your organization can opt for renewal of the certification.
