ISO 50001

What is the purpose of ISO 50001?

What is ISO 50001

ISO 50001 is the Energy Management standard that is based on the management system model of continual improvement. The standard is also used for other important and well-known standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 etc. The standard provides a framework of requirements for organizations to save and manage energy usage. ISO 50001 was published in June 2011 and the main idea behind conceiving the standard was to develop an international best practice to help companies manage energy in the best way.

ISO 50001 helps companies develop a policy for better and efficient energy usage. The EnMS integrates energy management into existing business systems thereby enabling companies to better manage their energy, bring in more energy savings and improve energy performance. Even the government is working towards improving measures to manage the usage of energy and promoting compliance with the energy management standard.

EnMS comes with a set of procedures and techniques that has systemic tracking, analyzing and careful planning of using energy by making use of the Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) framework in order to seek continual improvement.

Benefits of implementing ISO 50001

By certifying to the ISO 50001, organizations achieve numerous benefits:

  •          Improves the brand image of the organization due to the globally recognized EnMS standard
  •          Enhances the corporate image through improved credibility among customers and stakeholders
  •          Provides assistance to comply with current and future targets of energy
  •          Reduction in energy usage
  •          Reduction in the emission of green-house gases
  •          Brings in informed decision-making process
  •          Awareness in energy usage among staff
  •          Improvement in operational efficiencies

Who can implement ISO 50001?

Companies both small or large, irrespective of their origin or location or social conditions implement the EnMS standard. Since this standard is aligned with the existing management standards, it is very much possible for companies to integrate EnMS into their existing management standard. The primary goal of the standard is to save and manage energy usage, therefore, any industry willing to address this concern can implement and certify to the standard.

What is the certification process to implement EnMS?

The certification process takes place in various stages:

  •       The first stage is to perform an initial assessment and to understand if the requirements of ISO 50001 are met.
  •        The second stage involves determining the effectiveness of the system and to confirm if the ISO standard is implemented into the company’s operations.
  •        The next step is to know any corrective actions taken to address the requirements. If there are no conformities, then the organization can move to the certification process.
  •        An external certification body reviews the documents and analyses to determine if the company can be certified for ISO 50001.
  •        If the audit body is satisfied with the company’s new implementation policy of energy management, then ISO 50001 certification is issued to the company by the certification body.

The Energy Management standard certification is valid for three years and should undergo necessary audits each year in order to make sure your company is in compliance with the requirements of the ISO 50001 standard.
